Reel Asian and TSV invited Japanese artist and filmmaker Takashi Ishida to inhabit the TSV Gallery during the course of his exhibition, Trans-, concluding his year-long creative stay in Toronto. Ishida will be using the walls and floor as a canvas for an ever-evolving stop-action animation. Trained as a painter, Tahashi Ishida's videos unfurl through time like emaki (picture scrolls), revealing a brilliant exploration of line, shape, perspective, surface, repetition, and pattern. Throughout the exhibition, Ishida will be adding bit by bit to his organically growing work, so return visits to the show are highly recommended!
Takashi Ishida, born in Tokyo in 1972, is a renowned japanese artist/filmmaker. His works have shown extensively at Japanese museums, galleries, and film festivals and also internationally, including a recent residency in UK. In 2007, he received the prestigious Most Promising Young Talent prize from the Fine Art Division of Gotoh Memorial Cultural Award. Since receiving the prize, Ishida has been based in Toronto, where he remains until the end of February 2009.
